Reflections of Paul Timmins
about the II Conference RELAPRO Bs Aires April /2017
It was a tremendous professional honor and opportunity
for me to travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina in April for the II Congress of Red
Latinoamericana de Profesionales de la Orientación (RELAPRO), titled
“Approaches Models and Strategies of Guidance in Latin America."
It is humbling to have been elected to lead the National
Career Development Association (NCDA). I’m president-elect now, and will serve
as president for a year starting in October, 2017. For more than a century,
NCDA’s members have developed the theories that guide career development work,
conducted research to inform effective practice, and inspired and empowered
individuals to achieve their career and life goals. To celebrate this work,
I’ve chosen a simple theme for my presidential year: “Leading the Way by
Integrating Theory, Research, and Practice.”
I was so inspired as I
learned about the work being done by everyone in attendance at the Congress. I
salute your work to develop an understanding of the unique career development
needs of those in your own countries and your commitment to supporting those
clients through strong partnerships and support across the borders of your
countries.
Though my participation in
conversations was limited by my lack of fluency in Spanish, I was truly struck
by how many of the conversations you’re having mirror challenges that we face
in the United States:

Need for strong counseling training. One of our
NCDA trustees is our Trustee for Counselor Educators and Researchers. By having
a representative on the Board who can advocate for strong training, and through
programming like our annual Counselor Educator Academy, we strive to support
faculty members who are teaching the next generation of career practitioners.
And our recently-launched Credentialing Initiative which will help our members
demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge to effectively serve their
clients.

Advocating for public policy that supports career
development. We all have a need to lobby the leaders of our governments to
ensure that they develop strong schools, establish programs that provide
training for those who wish to enter new careers, and provide resources for
career development practitioners. Our NCDA Government Relations Committee leads
these efforts for our association, alerting members to legislation that could
impact their work and encouraging members, when the time is right, to connect
with their representatives in government to ask for their support of key
legislation.

Need to support each other in our work. This is why
I have chosen to make NCDA my professional “home.” I learn so much from my
colleagues -- and I really value the chance to share my work with them. Our
work settings may be different and our clients may have different needs -- but
we all strive to support the clients we serve.
I left convinced that
NCDA’s members (most, of course, are in the US, but others are around the
world) and all of friends in Latin America can learn much from each other --
and I am thrilled that we are moving forward with establishing a formal
partnership.

Timmins sobre la II Congreso RELAPRO Bs Aires Abril / 2017
Fue un tremendo honor profesional y oportunidad
para mí viajar a Buenos Aires, Argentina en abril para el II Congreso de la Red
Latinoamericana de Profesionales de la Orientación (RELAPRO), titulado
"Enfoques Modelos y Estrategias de Orientación en América Latina".
Con humildad comunico haber sido elegido para
dirigir la Asociación Nacional de Desarrollo Profesional (NCDA). Soy presidente
electo ahora y presidiré por un año a partir de octubre de 2017. Durante más de
un siglo, los miembros de NCDA han desarrollado las teorías que guían el
trabajo de desarrollo de carrera, llevaron a cabo investigaciones para informar
prácticas efectivas e inspiraron y Personas con poder para lograr sus metas de
carrera y de vida. Para celebrar este trabajo, he elegido un tema sencillo para
mi año presidencial: "Liderando el Camino Integrando Teoría, Investigación
y Práctica".
Yo he sido muy inspirado y he aprendido mucho
sobre el trabajo que están haciendo todos los presentes en el Congreso. Saludo
su trabajo en miras a desarrollar una comprensión de las necesidades únicas de
desarrollo profesional de aquellos en sus propios países y su compromiso de
apoyar a esos usuarios a través de alianzas sólidas y apoyo a través de las
fronteras de sus países.
Aunque mi participación en las conversaciones
fue limitada por mi falta de fluidez en español, me sorprendió muchísimo la
similitud de las conversaciones que se están enfrentando en los Estados Unidos:
• Necesidad de un fuerte entrenamiento de
consejería. Uno de nuestros objetivos en NCDA es nuestro apuesta por Educadores
e Investigadores Consejeros. Al tener un representante en la Junta que puede
abogar por un entrenamiento fuerte, y a través de la programación de nuestra
Academia de Educadores de Consejeros anuales, nos esforzamos por apoyar a los
miembros de la facultad que están enseñando a la próxima generación de
profesionales de carrera. Y nuestra recién lanzada Iniciativa de Credenciales
que ayudará a nuestros miembros a demostrar que poseen las habilidades y el
conocimiento para servir efectivamente a sus consultantes.
• Abogar por políticas públicas que apoyen el
desarrollo profesional. Todos tenemos la necesidad de presionar a los líderes
de nuestros gobiernos para asegurar que desarrollen escuelas fuertes,
establezcan programas que proporcionen capacitación para aquellos que desean
ingresar en nuevas carreras, y provean recursos para profesionales de
desarrollo profesional. Nuestro Comité de Relaciones Gubernamentales de NCDA
lidera estos esfuerzos para nuestra asociación, alertando a los miembros sobre
la legislación que podría afectar su trabajo y alentar a los miembros, cuando
sea el momento adecuado, a conectarse con sus representantes en el gobierno
para pedir su apoyo a la legislación clave.
• Necesidad de apoyarnos mutuamente en nuestro
trabajo. Es por eso que he elegido hacer de NCDA mi "hogar"
profesional. Aprendo mucho de mis colegas, y realmente valoro la oportunidad de
compartir mi trabajo con ellos. Nuestra configuración de trabajo puede ser diferente
y nuestros consultantes pueden tener diferentes necesidades - pero todos nos
esforzamos por apoyar a los usuarios a los que servimos.
Quedé
convencido de que los miembros del NCDA (la mayoría, por supuesto, están en los
Estados Unidos, pero otros están alrededor del mundo) y todos los amigos en
América Latina podemos aprender mucho unos de otros - y estoy encantado de que
estemos avanzando con el establecimiento Una asociación formal.
